This one day course covers the essentials of a map and compass use in the hills. It is mostly practical, out and about in the hills of the Peak District.
All participants receive detailed course materials for free which includes lots of exercises for improving your navigation after the course.
Is it for me?
You are welcome to come on the course with no experience at all and, hopefully at the end you will have the confidence to use your new found skills to explore the Peak District and beyond.

What we cover
We start with the basics, and give you plenty of chance to become familiar with your map and compass. We will go out onto the hill, and learn in a practical way. This will be backed up by a summary session and theory.
We intend to look at the following areas and will cover your areas of interest.
• Orientation of the map
• Map symbols
• Scales
• Ground shape and contours
• Measuring distances
• Taking bearings
• Calculating how long a particular walk will take
• Strategies for finding a feature (micro navigation)
• Identifying the mountains round about (macro navigation)
The course will adapt according to the prevailing conditions to make the best of the weather be it good or bad. All our staff are dedicated hillwalkers and mountaineers, and have a great depth of knowledge of the local area. They are qualified and experienced in teaching at all levels, and will be keen to pass on their knowledge to you.
