Course Content
The training course will follow the MLTUK Walking Group Leader syllabus. Course content includes practical skills and techniques required when leading and supervising groups in open country.
The course is three days long. Each day we will begin with a focus upon the days aims and objectives. The briefing will also focus upon the weather forecast, destination and equipment for the day. An example programme is detailed below
A practical hill day
• Navigational skills using both 1:25,000 and 1:50,000 maps
• Route choice
• Hazard identification and avoidance
• Access and environmental issues
Second practical hill day
• Consolidation of navigation skills, plus skills for poor visibility
• Group management and leadership issues
• Hazards
• Route choice
• Group and leaders equipment
Third day, possibly short time spent on the hill
• Putting all the skills together
• Campcraft
• Supervision and use of stoves and tents
• Organisation and the overnight experience
• Bunkhouse and hut accommodation
• Common problems and scenarios faced by leaders in the hills
• Problem prevention
• Casualty carries
• Search techniques
• Questions forum, course de-brief and individual feedback
In addition, there will be evening sessions, covering some of the more theoretical aspects of the syllabus. Areas include.
• Leaders’ responsibilities
• Preparation and planning
• Risk assessment and risk management
• Legal liability and insurance
• Access developments, environmental bodies, and conservation issues
• Unaccompanied journeys and remote supervision
Hayfield lies in the heart of Peak National Park, overlooked by Kinder Scout. The hills and moorland of the Peak District provide ideal ground for this award.
